Reclaiming Your Identity with Anita Cheung

Reclaiming Your Identity with Anita Cheung

I had the pleasure of meeting Anita Cheung in the early days of WOASH, at that point we were participating in multiple events per week to get out in the community and build brand awareness, you could say we were well versed and they were beginning to all blur together. Except for Anita's, the moment I walked into the event not knowing much about her, her new business and what to expect I was in complete shock.

I mean it when I say this event was the best I had seen yet, she had a pop-up cereal bar! (I definitely had multiple bowls of fruit loops). A pillow wall for IG worthy shots, blow up chairs that we are all guilty of having when we were teenagers, a truck load of pink coloured floor pillows to get cozy on and a panel line up of some serious industry experts.

Since then I could never put my finger on Anita, she seemed to be everywhere I looked; hosting a panel I spoke on, the creator behind beautiful digital content, up on the wall at Lululemon being featured as an impactful woman in the business community and encouraging people to stay in bed a little longer as she hosted meditations.

Anita is the perfect inspiration for us multi-faceted thinkers, if you struggle with what to do next, overwhelmed by the endless ideas and interests you embody or want to make a major career change or pivot, Anita will show you that each path leads to a new one and was crucial to where she is today and how she operates her businesses.

4. Where did you grow up + what was your childhood like?

I grew up in East Vancouver, BC as a child of two refugees from the Vietnam war, in a community surrounded by other immigrant families. Asides from the usual highs and lows of childhood and intergenerational trauma, I was a little dreamer who was enrolled in a bunch of extracurriculars and who was mostly left to my own devices alongside my sister (our parents worked long hours.) This meant lots of summers spent in the library and fiddling around on the computer (which led to teaching myself the foundation of tools I use now in my work!)

5. What was your first job?

I worked at a retail shop on Davie Street.

6. When do you believe your inner self journey began?

Probably when I was 21? I was just about to graduate from university with a degree I couldn't realistically see myself using and feeling overwhelmed at the vastness of possibility that lay ahead.

7. What was a pivotal Me Time Moment in your life?

In July 2016, I was working on growing my nomadic yoga studio business (long story) at the same time as I was building a meditation studio with two other business partners. I broke down one afternoon on the kitchen floor- absolutely bawling- because I just couldn't keep it all up. The yoga studio business wasn't profitable yet and I was feeling stretched- both financially, energetically, and emotionally. I was worried about "quitting it" because I didn't know what people would think or say. I didn't know how folks would understand my identity without my (first) business attempt. In the end, that moment was pivotal in my understanding of marching to the beat of my own drum. Since then, I continue to practice this mentality- of doing me, instead of feeling constrained by whatever imaginary boxes I think people are putting me into. I had the same conversation with myself when I left the studio two years later, and in branching out in the multi-faceted work I do today.
